Who do you think you are?

There is an occasional crisis of style in my world - the latest is in the form of this stunning, but so not me, silk maxi from J Crew.  I admit to being inspired by a Gigi post reviewing the same dress and the cuteness of her darling shopping companion.  Then I went to get a better look at the web site and promptly fell in love with the merlot color, the sale + promo pricing and the idea of sashaying into friends' homes for summer BBQs-not in boyfriend jeans and a top, but in a glorious gown. What was I thinking???

This dress clearly breaks many of of my "rules".

1. Strapless bra required - I don't own one-though I should
2. Waist defining - quite the opposite
3. Useful for several events - unlikely

What is has are pockets - love that; a gorgeous color, hearty silk and full lining.  I could only wear it with my highest heels - (apparently while reclining on a veranda).

Yes - I own these crazy high shoes - and they are comfortable - for about 20 minutes on my feet - though when I bought them 4 or 5 years ago I could last an evening in them.  I love the silk upper with wooden platform - such a juxtaposition of soft and hard surfaces---what we do for fashion!

I suppose I could wear it to an upcoming engagement party - for my stepson - who is has the most charming and lovely fiancee we could hope for.  She is a fashionista and wears a lot of maxi skirts so I may get her opinion before I make my final decision.

Finally - I had to share this:

Since we're talking about decadence - here is a gastronomic indulgence that I did not need to know about. Tater Nachos at Harrys Bar on Filmore St. in SF, shared with sweet husband on a lovely Sunday afternoon stroll last weekend.  Potatoes are my favorite food on the entire planet, so finding out a new way to fatten them up really wasn't my wisest move - but it had to be done.

I hope you are doing well and getting some Spring weather.  It is baseball central around here so I'm happy for warm afternoons in the bleachers watching Rocket Arm and Slugger do their thing.

Thoughts on the dress...don't be shy - but do be kind.

  1. Love this! It is beautiful! This is the story of my life - buying things I'd never really wear. Sigh...

I noticed the autocorrect changed fiancé to finance? Maybe your computer thinks she's a rich girl!

    1. Thanks for the edit Wendy - blasted auto correct!
      Isn't the dress dreamy? **sigh*

  2. OMG...Tater. Tots. Nachos. Sorry, always distracted by the food. I do believe maxis are made to be worn with flats so you will need to pay the $10 for the hem job and not wear the heels. Then you can wear a multitude of places....Mother's Day Brunch, the wedding, date night, pool party, opera, Tuscany....

    1. Right - Tater Tot nachos - I had to order them! At least we got the sour cream and guacamole on the side ;-)
The hem job would probably cost considerably more than $10 given the lining....something to think about - for Santa Barbara or Newport Beach since we're staying on the west coast this summer - Tuscany is out of the question.

  3. The dress breaks 3 of your rules. How many rules do you have? Does breaking 3 = 10% or more like 50%? I am too analytical, I know.

If you really like it you don't need to save it for events. Wear it with a linen cardi to go out for lunch. In the merlot color you could possibly wear it with boots and a big, chunky sweater over top in the fall or with a pretty jacket/sweater for a Christmas party. If you can't see yourself wearing it for more than one situation I would say pass.

Those potatoes look so good. I cannot resist anything with black olives.

  4. Hi xoxo-I have a few rules (for and against) but the prosof gorgeous color and fabric offset the negative so I'm really at a -1 vs -3 - if that helps ;-)

  5. Love those shoes, Julie! Oh, if you like tater nachos, then you would LOVE poutine. Add a bit of gravy to those tater nachos and you get a similar taste.

  6. Amazing tots!

I am for the dress, even paying for the alterations. Sometimes we have to let good reason go out the window and live a little. You seem to be very thoughtful about these things and not at all whimsical about keeping things you won't wear. Let this be your one indulgence. I agree to casualize it with a cardigan. Don't think much of it and just wear it. Not in the bleachers, of course, but just out. I've seen lots of maxis already -- some a lil dramatic for daytime -- so I think you'd fit right in. Hopefully I'll be joining you. Still haven't re-purchased.

    1. Thanks Gigi - I still have the dress...a good sign. Also contemplating a dressier maxi - but less likely to wear it unless I can make it more casual. http://www.trinaturk.com/vina-dress/142631.html?dwvar_142631_sb_color_code=BLK#q=vina&start=1.
I've tried the dill which is horrible on me, but the cut and fit are amazing. I might order the black to compare. An indulgence for sure!

    2. The Trina Turk is beautiful. It looks dressier than the J. Crew one, imo.

    3. Isn't it funny how poly crepe is dressier than silk? The silhouette of the TT is easier to wear than the crew and I think I'm going to order it so I can compare - and make sure I can get the correct "foundation" (ah-hm) garment for the girls ;-)
      Thanks, Gigi!!!!!

  7. Oh my goodness, love both those shoes and that dress! I could never wear something this low cut in the front (the result of breast feeding four kids!) but I adore the cut!

    1. About Last Weekend - I have to find a gravity defying foundation garment if I hope to keep the dress ;-)

  8. I had no idea that dress was dreamy silk until you pointed that out. I do that too, oh wouldn't it be perfect for some elegant poolside party but when was the last time I was invited to or attended one ... umm, that would be a decade ago and never, respectively.

The only thing I can say about the dress is to consider shortening it if you keep it. If the shoes you have to wear with are only good for 20 minutes, that would ruin the relaxed attitude of the dress, no?

The tater decadence look tres yum!

  9. Hi Tiffany Rose-I went to return the dress yesterday. After I did I walked around the downtown where my store is, went back in, tried it again and re-purchased it. I was really regretting letting it go. Good news, it was less than $130 - bad news final sale. At least now the alterations won't sting so much. I am day dreaming of a beach vacation where I can wear it to an outside dinner on a warm night ;-)

    1. Julie, what was the sale price, assuming you're still discussing silk collection maxi? Stores are showing $329.99.....?

  10. Gigi-yes - same dress when scanned in store was $209.00 (I think) less 40%, net $125.95.
