Black is the new Black

As much as I need to add some color into my wardrobe, there are some pieces that get the most wear if they are neutral tones.

I took advantage of an in-store promotion at Trina Turk this past weekend and picked up this fabulous dress.  (It is longer on my 5'5" frame, hitting about 2" above the knee.)

Finding the perfect LBD can be a bit of a fashion holy grail.  For me it is an elusive item that I don't often "need" but can certainly use.  Earlier this year I retired my everyday LBD, which after many years of service was (post weight loss too big) and honestly, I was over it.

As I can attest to with all of my Trina Turk pieces, it is beautifully made (in California), fully lined and can be styled for day to evening with ease.  I'll be wearing it with opaque tights and flat over the knee boots and a scarf or statement necklace for day - and my even pull out my opera length leather gloves it is it really cold out.  For evening, I'll likely wear sheer black hose and pumps with a necklace that has a bit of shine or maybe a cluster of broaches.  The dress is actually a replacement item for a birthday gift I received from DH this summer, which I returned as it was expensive and the cost per wear would have been much too high.

Staggered promo discounts can be kryptionite for me.  I also bought this skirt, which bumped my discount up considerably so it is a win-win even though the shopping budget is officially exhausted for at least a couple of months.  I'm thrilled to have 2 new basics to add into my closet.  My shopping this fall feels excessive, but I am really building my wardrobe and have done an enormous amount of weeding and pruning of my closet over the past few months.  I am sticking to my rules of only buying things that work immediately with other pieces I own, are flattering, well made and can be worn for multiple occasions.

If there had been unlimited funds available I'd have bought a new bag in a heartbeat.  Trina's new handbag collection is really gorgeous and the Kir Royale is my favorite.  I love the matte finish to the metal mesh combined with the leather which creates such a rich mix of textures.  I've go not doubt this will be on the short list of wish list items for quite some time.

What has you swooning this fall?  Please do let me know. I love to hear from you.

  1. Very nice picks. Not sure what I'm jonesing for this season. For some reason I want a cobalt blue coat. I am hoping for a mild winter so the coat will be worn maybe half dozen times...ack! Still thinking about the navy cape just can't pull the trigger.

    1. I love a vibrant coat. I bought a vivid-not hot-pink coat several years ago. Compliments every time I wear it. Hope you find what you are looking for.

  3. Oh I absolutely love both pieces, Julie! Both are classic and incredibly chic, not to mention I'm sure they are very well-made. Buying a few items that you truly love, even if they are a little pricier, is so much better than buying numerous items that you just 'like', isn't it? I'd much rather have fewer high quality pieces that I'm in love with, than numerous lower quality items that I only like and will rarely wear. It really does end up saving money in the long run to invest in the better made items.

    1. Hi Melissa, Thanks for stopping by. I'm very happy with these purchases and am wearing the dress today with black tights and low heels. Plus the hammock pearl necklace from J Crew-not my favorite, but I couldn't wait to wear the dress :-)
