It's a Wrap

After much - and I mean a LOT of indecision about adding another dress to my wardrobe, I have finally narrowed it down to two.  Not surprisingly they are both from my very favorite woman in fashion, Diane von Furstenberg.  Diane knows how to design a perfect dress, although if she could add a little extra fabric to conceal the girls in the wrap dresses I'd be thrilled.  Not to worry though - I have a perfect, whisper thin slip that does the job.

I came to the conclusion about DVF's place in my wardrobe when I was finishing up my most recent closet clean-out.  The question I'd asked myself during the 2 hour process of transitioning summer items out and fall items into rotation, was, "what is my favorite" piece of clothing?  It took no time to realize that my first (and only) DVF wrap, purchased with birthday funds in New York over 3 years ago, is the best item I own.  Not only is it always flattering, garnering compliments from men and women, it is well-made and comfortable.  I'm sure I've blathered on here about my dress - but I needed the reassurance that investing in another variation would be a wise splurge.

The New Julian is, for my money, the most versatile style of DVF wrap styles and it fits me best; the length is perfect it transitions from day to evening with ease.  Considering the cost of this dress, it has to be all things in my closet.  The new prints for the Resort '15 collection are absolutely stunning and I've been impatiently waiting for months to see them in person.  On Saturday I tried the poppy print below and it is gorgeous.  I am anxiously awaiting a call from my Nordstrom associate with the arrival of the Leandra (2nd dress) so I can determine which is the holiday gift my unsuspecting hubby will be rolling his eyes at this year.  My sweet husband absolutely does not understand my love of fashion but fortunately he will indulge it a few times a year.

My admiration for DVF knows no bounds.  I have ordered her newest books, Journey of a Dress, a companion to the exhibition I saw in LA a earlier this year and her autobiography, The Woman I Wanted to Be.  Although I'm not a big fan of reality TV, I have been watching House of DVF on E and I'm as enthralled with DVF as the contestants are.  What I most admire about DVF is her desire to empower women and the down-to-earth attitude she seem to have about life.  She really wants her customers to feel confident and beautiful, and her designs are her way of helping women achieve those feelings of strength and power that come with confidence.

Help me decide.  Which dress do you like best?  I do have to choose - although maybe one now and one on sale next year - or is that just too much of a good thing?   I'm hoping to add a DVF maxi next summer to wear to my step-son's wedding.  The the actual dress will need daughter in-law approval, she is already knows that I will be probably be wearing DVF on the big day - what better excuse to add to my collection **wink**.

Have a great week!

  1. ugh...blogger. I'll try once more. I went to look at your dresses and fell in love with the Kailey. If it was navy, it would be mine. Back to you. The first dress is safe and therefor appeals more to me. The second is quite daring for me. not sure on the length and the red in the crotch area.

    1. The Kailey is gorgeous! The Leandra is likely to be too short but I will wait and see. I adore the print of the Leandra - so I'm hoping the print placement is flattering and the length manageable.

  3. Wendy-You must go to a DVF store in NY. How fun to be going back. I adore that city. What else will you be doing when you go? I'd be buying up theater tickets - so many great shows.

    1. I think we may wing it on the tickets, though am waiting to see what new things will be playing, I do have some other ideas up my sleeve - more to come there!

  4. I actually sat next to DVF in the theater one night. I was so enthralled, I kept trying to be cool and not babble and not stare and not do anything obvious with pocket mirror that I didn't see much of the play. Well, any of the play. Was thinking really stupid thoughts, like would it be appropriate to say "I love your work" or is that only for actors? Seriously I was benumbed. In work situation I've been with the well known, the "famous," the famous, the famous, the FAMOUS -- well, you get it, but this had me dumbfounded. So she was wearing a big fur coat, lots of heavy gold jewelry, too much makeup (sad but true), didn't get to peer at the dress.

Afterward I asked Himself if he could think of anything I could have said. His suggestion:
"Excuse me, didn't you use to be Betsey Johnson?"

    1. Wow! I'd be speechless if I sat next to DVF in the theater and would be just like you - trying to be cool and not stare. I've been around well known sports celebs in a former life and was never phased by their presence. Around my design or entertainment idols - I'd be a wreck.

  5. I say the first dress the second won't date as well

  6. I vote that you get the Poppy print now, and save for the Leandra to get later when it goes on sale. Hope you're able to get a maxi for the wedding, too. It would be so lovely. Do you have a specific print in mind?

    1. Thanks Melissa. Your suggestion is the likely plan. I have to see the Leandra in person - the print really wows me. I don't have a print in mind for a maxi - but it will have to be something subtle and understated.

  7. For some reason my previous comment didn't go through...... Anyway, the Julian dress in the poppy print is 20% off at Bloomingdales right now! Yay! Use the code "HOLIDAY". :)

  8. Julie, I tried three New Julian dresses in London and looked so bad in them, I sized up to a US 10 and they still grasped every bit of my boob/belly fat, even the SA, said, no, not working for you - my dream died there. They are so easy to wear and I had hoped they'd be an answer to my what to wear problems. years ago I had one with a more flared skirt, wish I'd kept it, that style was better for my figure.
I love her, that book would be a great read.

    1. Tabitha-that is such a bummer that the wraps you tried didn't work. I like the styles with the fuller skirts, there are a couple on her web site and I've tried the style from the Pop art group - it was perfection. The woven skirts on me are awful. The wraps never cover the girls - so I just go w/ a slip. Good luck with the hunt - I'm sure you will find something perfect and chic.

  9. Julie, Love both of these. I am kind of partial to the second print, but I agree that the poppy is a classic and will probably be wearable to everything. Gosh I do have to get into the store and try one of these. I always thought the wrap wouldn't be the best choice since I also have a similar 'girls' issue, but I'll have to give them a try as you love yours so! x
