I'm still here. Busy as ever trying to loose weight, eat clean, trying to convince myself that I like exercise and ruminating about what's next. My kids will soon be in 10th and 12th grades and my career needs a revamp. I'm struggling with how much they need me home. You see, my younger son, Rocket Arm, likes to have me around after school, but he'd be fine if I was working more. The older one, Slugger, is very independent. Both boys know their way around the kitchen, and have been raised to know how to prepare some basic meals, clean up after themselves and function as young men. We are close even though they are rarely home before 5pm these days. There is a practical need for me to be working more - perhaps outside of the home as college is around the corner and some major home renovations are needed. I've been spoiled by 10 years of a very flexible schedule, the absence of office politics and zero commute. Even when I've had part-time gigs, I wasn't invested enough to get pulled into the seemingly inevitable BS. My commute was during off hours, so I could listen to music and enjoy the drive. My husband has been spoiled too and can work as many hours as needed to earn his keep and advance his career, though he'd be happy to dial it back a bit. I think he's exhausted.
I've also been finding satisfaction with less. Not much has been added to my wardrobe this year (except for shoes) and I feel overwhelmed by the amount of stuff we have in our closets. Somehow, as much as I purge, it isn't enough. My fantasy is a really lean closet of beautiful, practical pieces I can feel good about owning. The only exception to this closet diet is shoes. It seems I can always justify a new pair. I am hard on my shoes, so having a large rotation isn't the worst thing in the world. My sweet husband even gave me a lovely necklace for our anniversary and I'm considering returning it to buy a new bag. Practically speaking I need a bag more than another piece of jewelry....does this make me a terrible person??? I have been on the hunt for my next bag for ages and budget was a major consideration. .... first world problems - I know!
Finally, the wedding. It is rapidly approaching and the original dress, while gorgeous was returned. My seamstress couldn't fix the cleavage problem to our satisfaction, which was a deal breaker. There have been several selections ordered and returned until what I hope is the final cut.
This dress is unlike anything I've ever worn, and I really do like it. It is very comfortable, flattering and festive. A major plus - I don't need to worry about uncomfortable foundation garments. I also have an ample selection of shoes, bags and jewelry to put the look together. I scored the dress during a pricing promotion which saved a bundle. Though I was hesitant to wear black, I think it is fine for an evening wedding (especially since I'm not trying to make statement about the couple). However, I've got my fingers crossed that Halston releases this dress in another color for fall in my fantasy hues of marsala or a deep crimson-wouldn't that be pretty?
Enough about me. What have you been up to? I'd love to chat :-)
Good to hear from you!
ReplyDeleteA lot of new for me. I finally started working again(as my little one started first grade) and instead of going back to what i did before,i started working at the crew. I enjoy it immensly. Not wrinting my blog anymore, but i am busy on IG.
Hi Ina-I love Instagram-so fun and easy. Thanks for stopping by.
DeleteGreat to see a post from you! I just got back home from New York on the weekend so everything still feels a bit surreal. I also need to lose a bit of weight - over the past few months, I reverted back to my undergrad habit of chips and Coke while burning the midnight oil, forgetting that my current metabolism is no longer that of an 18 year-old. Like Ina, I am also using IG more than my blog these days.
ReplyDeleteHi Louise-Thanks for stopping by. I love NY-I hope you had a fun getaway.
DeleteSo glad to see you. I too am feeling a bit overwhelmed with all our "stuff". We are planning a big fix of the back of the house and will need to move it all out and into a POD. My hope is we need just one POD. I did find I was almost busier with high school kids because of the athletics. Having a flexible schedule seemed to help my sanity. Now that they have both flown, I have really picked up the pace at work...still flexible though. Love the dress!
ReplyDeleteHi BB-The best time to clean out is during a big fix. I bet you'll be amazed at the stuff in the pod you don't miss. Thanks for stopping by :-)
DeleteJulie it's so good to get an update from you. Your boys are really growing aren't they, the time does fly. It sounds like they could handle it for sure if you were working more but of course it's a tough choice isn't it. Still, they sound very capable and independent. That's not by accident it sounds like you've raised them well!
ReplyDeleteI adore that dress it's so feminine, and the structure of it looks amazing!
As far as the bag goes, my own nice bags were my picks as gifts from my husband in lieu of jewelry, I'm just not a fine jewelry person. I wear a few items every day and I don't want anything else, anytime my husband mentions it I say don't do it, I'd rather have a scarf or something!
xo
Thank you Dani. My boys have absolutely been raised to be good men. I had too many responsibilities as a kid-they have far fewer-but they know they're expected to be positive, contributing members of society. I think because I was essentially a latch key kid starting at age 11, I am conflicted about not being immediately available if they need me.
DeleteThanks, as always, for your stopping by.
That dress is utterly utterly stunning! I always love your choices but this one is pitter patter stuff.
ReplyDeleteShoes for me too, I don't own/buy many clothes, I think I have more shoes but they can change the look of my plain basics pretty well.
Please consider doing a mirror pic of the dress, I'm al starry eyed over it.
Hi Tabitha-You have such great taste-it means a lot that you like the dress. Perhaps a mirror photo once the final accessories are chosen and the self tanning actually works.
DeleteThanks for stopping by.
Julie, Glad you are back blogging. I know you are busy with life and family. It's a lot isn't it? I absolutely adore that dress. So elegant! Your guys sound like they are really independent. I know things are changing too here with one going to be a senior as well!
ReplyDeleteYou sound like me. I am always scoping out a new bag every year or so. I have returned jewelry from my husband for bags too. I just love them and wear them so much more than I ever would jewelry, so I think it's a good choice!
Thanks for the tips on the shows on my blog! Hope you have a great July 4th and are enjoying summer.
