The Look

Thinking about style and how I want to dress moving forward is a fun distraction.  My as my body is changing so it my lifestyle.  I'm going to be working in a small law firm 4 days a week from 9am-3pm and I'm really looking forward to the challenges of learning new technology, and an entirely new vernacular.

I will have plenty of time for my wardrobing business and my various volunteer commitments, and I am happy to be filling my days more productively and increasing my contribution to our bank account. The office is small and the dress code is basically "common-sense" professional.  I won't need to wear suits, but need to look polished.  My daily uniform of jeans, boots and sweaters will be updated and I am looking forward to wearing my nicer pieces and many of my shoes that have not seen the light of day in months.

I'm starting my new gig on February 3 and will take time this month to reorganize my closet.  The jeans will have to make room for the dresses and skirts I store elsewhere, shoes will be shined and trousers will be hemmed.  It is unlikely that I will need any work pieces for the duration of the winter months, but just in case a new dress is needed this is the one I will order.

I love the look of this dress.  I tried it recently and it was near perfection, though one of the arm holes was a bit too low, but a simple alteration might fix that.  I would not style it as shown, however, my look would consist of dark black hose and simple heels.  I would also add a linear earring and a silver cuff keeping the overall look very minimal.

Admiring the other Helmut Lang pieces at Nordstrom made me want to take deeper look at this designer.  While pursuing various online retailers I came across this modern and sophisticated look that just took my breath away.  To me this is simple, elegant perfection, and I want it in the worst way!  Though I'd never wear a sheer white top with a black bra, I'd create a similar look with a more suitable top like this or this.

In my mind I've already justified the skirt as something that could be worn year round.  I love to wear maxis, especially in the summer, though the styles I own are simpler - paired to a tee or tank - for comfort first, style second.  Fortunately this piece is on back order so if I pull the preverbal trigger, I will have forgotten about the inevitable buyers' remorse (that comes on when I want a big ticket item) by the time the shipment arrives.

Do you have a "look" that draws you in?  A designer who somehow just knows you?  Please share.

  2. I recently found a few Helmut Lang sweaters on sale but they were made of alpaca which my skin does not respond well to. His clothes are so simple, modern, and beautiful. I do believe the dress will serve you well.

    1. Thank you Blue Booby. I am going to be on the lookout for sale pieces from Helmut Lang - as one piece would topple my budget right now.

  4. Congrats on your new job! The dress looks fantastic. I love modern/minimal looks. I don't know if there's a particular designer I gravitate to, but I really like Vince, Club Monaco and Emerson Fry.

  6. It is nice you got a good timed gig - I love so many designers but I am not very loyal to just one. It's funny because I don't work full time and left the ladder many years ago but I find that half the time I notice the more you work the more you spend loads of money on stuff to go to work so one definitely needs to not get carried away and stick to your own uniform :)

    1. Thanks! I agree that finding a work "uniform" is the way to go. It has been 7 years since I've been in an office and I'm looking forward to the challenge.

  8. Yes! Congrats on your new job!! Can't wait to see your new wardrobe. I had a black dress -more fitted than this one - but same neckline 25 years ago and i loved it...wonder what happened to it. I'm still in UGSS and denim shirt all day - not a pretty sight.
