As I mentioned in an earlier post, I am committed to keep my clothing purchases this year to a concise and well thought out list. So far, so good - but January is a transitional month with lots of winter sales and a few bits of resort so it is really too early for me to do much damage.
I know myself well and don't really want to do a personal makeover of going cold turkey in regards to shopping, I need to accept that I need some wiggle room in my plan for items I did not know would appear; meet the criteria of fitting into my wardrobe with other items and my lifestyle. You know - when you find that "perfect" thing which inevitably happens exactly 2 days after you've sworn off shopping.
Enter the Cubist print at J Crew. Prints rarely speak to me but when they do, I listen. This print is perfection for my wardrobe and will work well with many navy basics, white tees and shirts and a pair of chocolate brown woven wedge sling back sandals that I love but rarely wear. The Collection Look Book features a clutch in this print worn with a top which is mostly invisible and paired with a pant in the same print. A lot of print for sure, but one of the pieces needs to land in my closet. My amazing online VPS is looking for more cubist print details - what does the top look like; will there be other items in the print; and so on. One item in this print will be plenty so I want to know my options before submitting that order.

Are you a planner in regard to your wardrobe purchases? Do you allow yourself wiggle room for things you didn't anticipate, or stand tough and stick to your plan? Or do you shop on the fly and if you find something that suits you, just go for it and as Tim Gunn says, "make it work"?
Happy Friday! Enjoy the weekend and the Super Bowl, if you're watching. I'm in it for the party, football pool, snacks and of course the commercials.

Wiggle Room is very necessary for me, I rail against the rules I impose on myself. This year I'm trying to buy very little, and if I do it has to replace or minimum one-in-one-out. I've tried a day-dress from the Brora sale that's going back, I replaced a couple of sweaters, I edited my "black section" of dressy clothes massively in November and replaced a few pieces... it's going well. If I saw something that really called to me and fit with what I own I would go for it. In the past I have made the mistake of falling in love with one item... but then "needing" shoes, bag, top, scarf, coat to go with it... I'm trying to avoid that nonsense. Doing that is basically wardrobe building from a single item!
ReplyDeleteI really like that cubist print, it reminds me of something? I love the browns and blues... can't wait to see more of it. Was this featured in JCrew's recent roll-out? I better go have a look!
Oh yes Superbowl very very big around here. I'm making nachos and I've got the champagne chilling. Have fun!!
Dani-As you can imagine I am opposed to wardrobe orphans and would never consider a piece that can't be worn with existing accessories, etc. I've done it before and it is a nightmare.
DeleteI think more of this print will be out in the late Feb. rollout at J Crew.
hi Julie - I missed this skirt as well - it is very pretty!
ReplyDeleteThis year I am taking a different tack with clothing purchases. I put aside so much each month in a clothing account. If the money for what I want is not in that account, I will not buy it until it gets there, as opposed to last year when I "borrowed ahead". As you know, I am really trying to change my approach to shopping and fashion and be much more thoughtful in my purchases. That is requiring me to really think what my style is and what is a good purchase for me versus a moment of "I love it!" I love how thoughtful you are being about this print - making sure that you get the one article of clothing that is going to make your heart sing! Love that!
No superbowl here - we may watch halftime show!
Hi Wendy-Good for you with the budget closely at hand and being more thoughtful with purchases. Enjoy your lovely wardrobe - you've got great stuff!
DeleteHi Julie. This colors in this skirt remind me of J.Crew's indigo floral silk skirt, which was incredibly popular and more versatile than I expected. I love to plan my wardrobe purchases and probably obsess more than I should about my lists. I do leave room and in the end I find things I didn't know I needed or that replace some planned item that didn't work out.
ReplyDeleteQuite the blowout on Sunday, who would have thought?
